51 Environmental Solutions Identified as Potential Planetary Repair Tipping Points by 2030

A new Earthshot Prize and University of Exeter study identifies 51 environmental solutions that could trigger positive tipping points and accelerate transformative planetary repair across nature, oceans, air, waste and climate by 2030.

A landmark new study by The Earthshot Prize and the University of Exeter’s Green Futures Solutions team has identified 51 environmental solution areas that could trigger rapid and transformative change to repair the planet within the next five years. The research comes after a northern summer marked by extreme heat and fire and as the world prepares for an unprecedented El Nino.

Titled “Positive Tipping Points: Accelerating system change to repair our planet,” the report advances Professor Tim Lenton’s pioneering positive tipping point science by applying it across all five Earthshots: Protect and Restore Nature, Clean Our Air, Revive Our Oceans, Build a Waste-Free World, and Fix Our Climate. The Earthshot Prize will use the findings to identify solutions with the potential to trigger rapid systems change.

The research examines how the planet is approaching negative tipping points, including the dieback of the Amazon rainforest, where catastrophic harm to ecosystems becomes irreversible. At the same time, the same science points to opportunities through positive tipping points, defined as thresholds where progress can become rapid and self-reinforcing.

The report explains that when adoption of a solution lowers costs, success can attract further investment while new policies spread to other geographies, creating a cascade effect that accelerates progress.

Professor Tim Lenton, Chair in Climate Change and Earth System Science at the University of Exeter, said, “To reverse damage to our ecosystems before it’s too late, we need to unlock positive tipping points, where progress builds on itself, costs fall with scale, and recovery becomes self-propelling. This is why this research is so relevant and needed, as it identifies the tipping points that collectively represent the best chance of repairing our planet and how we can reach them.”

The research identifies several areas where targeted action is already producing rapid and transformative change.

Clean energy is described as a master cascade. As solar and wind power have become cheaper, the economics of electric transport, clean buildings, industry and cleaner air have improved. Solar power costs have fallen around 90% in the past decade, while increasing deployment has helped reduce manufacturing costs. Lower costs have enabled further deployment, which has driven costs down further, attracted more investment and improved the technology. Today, solar is the cheapest source of electricity in most of the world.

Marine protected areas are also identified as a potential self-reinforcing solution. Well-designed and well-enforced ocean conservation has produced visible recovery of fish stocks and biodiversity within years. As communities have benefited from marine conservation, protection areas have expanded and progress has accelerated. Food security for coastal populations and climate resilience have strengthened in turn, with examples including the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park in Australia.

In January, the High Seas Treaty came into force, with the backing of over 140 countries, to close the gap in ocean conversation and protect biodiversity in international waters.

Clean cooking and household energy is another area identified as being close to a tipping point in several markets. Pay-as-you-go solar and clean cooking businesses are scaling across East and Southern Africa, while in Latin America and parts of Asia, the LPG transition is substantially complete, bringing health benefits to millions.

The report says creating the right conditions for a solution area to reach a tipping point is critical. Across all five Earthshots, it identifies three prerequisites: affordability, meaning the desired solution must be cost-competitive with the damaging incumbent; accessibility, meaning it must be practically and geographically available to those who need to adopt it; and attractiveness, meaning it must perform well enough, with sufficient social proof, to make adoption the obvious choice.

A central finding is that the five Earthshots are deeply interconnected by design, sharing the same conditions, infrastructure and risks within a single system. Certain interventions, including the clean electricity cascade, could therefore accelerate positive tipping points across all five Earthshots. At the same time, barriers such as the Global South investment gap could stall progress in the regions that need it most.

Dr. Steven R. Smith, lead author of the report and Research Fellow in the University of Exeter’s Green Futures Solutions team, said, “We looked at 51 solution areas across nature, oceans, air, waste and climate, and were struck by how progress in one area often depends on progress in another. We're not claiming every system is about to tip. Our report shows where the self-reinforcing mechanisms are, and what governments, investors and innovators can do to unlock them.”

The Earthshot Prize and the University of Exeter are publishing the research for the benefit of everyone united in the mission to repair the planet. The framework is intended to identify, select and scale solutions capable of driving transformative change, with The Earthshot Prize applying the latest science to its search for solutions that could trigger rapid systems change by 2030.

The full research report, “Positive Tipping Points: Accelerating system change to repair our planet,” brings together the analysis of 51 solution areas across nature, oceans, air, waste and climate and sets out the conditions under which positive, self-reinforcing change could accelerate planetary repair.
